DIY: matte hot pink lip

Perfect spring look from Jenni Kayne. I needed a matte hot pink stat upon seeing this photo, so where did I go to duplicate it? Why, the MAC counter at Nordstrom, of course! And what did I happen to find there? A matte hot pink lipstick - Candy Yum-Yum, from their spring line Quite Cute, to be exact. Naturally Candy Yum-Yum was on my mouth faster than my fave MAC girl Masha could even get it prepped for me, but the sad thing was the lipstick was on pre-order. The collection doesn’t launch until April 7. I purchased Candy Yum-Yum (duh), but decided to replicate the Jenni Kayne look at home in the meantime.

Here’s what I used: MAC Amplified lipstick in Impassioned (though any vibrant pink would work) or Revlon Matte Lipstick in Pink Pout as a base + MAC loose pigment in Magenta Madness, applied directly onto lips with a 228 MAC lip brush. Be sure to shake off the brush before applying! (Masha also recommended I try the pigment as a blush; I’ve yet to do this, but of course I’m gonna bite.)

And voila! Here’s my version! It looks much more powerfully pink in real life and I love it, though the idea of powder on my lips is still kinda weird, and I’d like to try doing this with a liner. On the upside, it doesn’t kiss off onto my coffee cup.
