beauty interview: daune stinson

Daune Stinson owns upscale resale boutique June (on 34th & Lyndale) and I’m so glad I discovered it, but more importantly, her. As I’ve said before, she’s one of the coolest chicks I know and has exquisite taste. She’s sold me some of my favorite pieces of clothing ever, especially the light blue Mongolian lamb vest I purchased from her last year. I figured her excellent taste would run to makeup too, and what do you know? It does. Check it out.

When did you start wearing makeup? - Around 13. I was obsessed with magazines and always looking for products at the one drugstore in a small town. An Avon lady came to our house regularly and she let me try the samples. I loved the tiny little lipsticks in the white tube – they had the perfect snap click!

Who taught you/what products did you use? - Mary, my best friend in 9th grade taught me. She was allowed to wear heavy duty makeup - dark foundation, bright blue eye shadow, globs of mascara. I still have some of my first makeup: a brown, tan, cream Cover Girl palate in a three layer container that swings open, Avon mini lipsticks, Indian Earth, a super strength bronzer that came in a little clay pot, Love’s foundation [three times darker than my skin, of course!] Max Factor frosted pink lipstick, and a Mary Quant white eye shadow from my aunt. And, I had a bottle of liquid blue mask that went on with a huge brush and peeled off.

What is your greatest beauty strength? - I think my skin – I’ve never had skin issues. It’s held up pretty well. Although I really wish sunscreen was a thing when I was in my teens and 20s. Use sunscreen!!

What is your daily beauty routine? - I usually wash my hair everyday [so going against trend!]. I switch around shampoos: Lush’s Cynthia Sylvia Stout - I’ve used this since the early 90s when a friend discovered it in England. Just got my hair cut by the charming Charlie Brackney at his new salon, Haus. I was lured by the wonderful packaging of their Davines products: Love Curl Enhance Shampoo, Delicate Replenishing Leave-In Mist and Sea Salt Primer for Wizards! I also go between Moroccan Oil and Kusco-Murphy Lavender Hair Cream. My go-to is Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray. Once a week I use cheap old Suave clarifying shampoo.
I always use my Clarisonic with Kinerase Gentle Daily Cleaner, then move to Caudalie products I discovered through Jane Belfry – I love them. I use Cleansing Water, Anti-aging Lip/Eye Serum and the Gentle Buffing Cream. Then, Karin Herzog Vita-a-Kombi 1 anti-aging cream [this stuff rocks but go straight to the 3 strength] and KH eye cream. And, Kiehl’s Ultra Moisturizing Eye Stick. I load up on eye products, as you get older it becomes more about skin care and less about makeup.
For makeup I start with MAC Paint as a primer and either a pale pinkish or brown Bobbi Brown or MAC shadow. I’m light on the eye shadow; my thing is heavy eyeliner. I discovered MAC Greasepaint Stick in Zinc Zone about a year ago. It’s a difficult product to work with but the color is perfect. Of course, they discontinued it so I search and stockpile it! I’ve always been on a never-ending search for mascara. Lately, I’ve found my way back to DiorShow Iconic; it’s great paired with Latisse and a Kevyn Aucoin eyelash curler.
I got hooked on NARS products by dear Kara. I use the Lipid Support Cream mixed with Philosophy’s Turbo Booster C Powder. The power is amazing but I think it might be turning my skin a bit orange. I mix NARS Orgasm Illuminator with either MAC Studio Moisture tint or NARS Sheer Glow foundation. If I remember I use NARS Multiples in Riviera and Luxor. I top it all off with MAC Bark on my eyebrows. I’m not a big lipstick girl; lately I’ve been using Chanel Boy along with NARS Belle du Jour.

I can’t smell – no smell at all - nothing. So I rely on other people to describe scents to me when I want perfume. I use Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille, Kiehl’s Original Musk [I remember what it smells like from years ago], and Santa Maria Novella - Peau d’Espagne.

What are your favorite products? What can’t you live without? -
Kiehl’s Ultra Moisturizing Eye Stick – I’ve gone through 100 of these. I’m convinced they work!
My Clairsonic, which I always travel with despite it weighing a ton. This changed my life when I started using it. It’s well worth the investment.
Kiehl’s Coriander Bath & Shower Liquid Body Cleanser – have used this for years. Kiehl’s rules my life. I read an interview with Patti Hansen over 20 years ago and she talked about Kiehl’s. I searched it out, found their little shop in NYC and someone to mail it to me on a regular basis. Their Crème de Corps body lotion is the only lotion in the world!

Who are your beauty icons? -
Patti Smith, Ines de la Fressange, Carine Roitfeld – the heavy eyeliner influence. I’ve recently been following Clare Vivier’s style via her blog. www.seevivier.blogspot.com/

What’s a beauty trend you’d like to see disappear forever? -
Bronzer! It’s weird and unnatural. Your face is bronzy golden but the rest of you isn’t?
